* Arthur Conan Doyle - Collected Works, incl. Sherlock Holmes (42 books)
ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE (1859–1930) was a prolific British writer and physician who remains one of the most influential figures in popular literature. He is best known for his four novels and fifty-six short stories about the fictional consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson, which are milestones in crime fiction. Doyle's works are still widely read and adapted in the 21st century, with Sherlock Holmes being recognised as the single most portrayed literary character in film and television history.
Doyle permanently transformed the detective genre with the introduction of his master sleuth in A STUDY IN SCARLET (1887), followed soon after by THE SIGN OF FOUR (1890). However, it was the short stories published in The Strand Magazine, later collected in THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES (1892) and THE MEMOIRS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES (1894), that sparked an unprecedented cultural phenomenon. Overwhelmed by the public's singular obsession with the character and wishing to dedicate himself to more "serious" historical fiction, Doyle famously killed off his creation in the story "The Final Problem." Public outcry and financial incentive eventually forced him to revive the detective, leading to the masterpiece THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES (1902) and THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES (1905).
While Holmes dominated his legacy, Doyle was a remarkably versatile author who produced a vast body of work across multiple genres. He possessed a deep passion for historical romance and considered works like MICAH CLARKE (1889) and THE WHITE COMPANY (1891) to be his finest literary achievements. He also ventured successfully into early science fiction and adventure, introducing the eccentric Professor Challenger to the world in THE LOST WORLD (1912), a thrilling narrative which gave its name to a subgenre of speculative fiction.
In the later stages of his life, Doyle's intellectual focus shifted dramatically toward Spiritualism, a movement he championed fiercely following the tragic losses of his son and brother during the First World War. He dedicated much of his final decade to writing non-fiction treatises defending his beliefs, though he still occasionally returned to fiction, releasing his final collection of detective stories, THE CASE-BOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES (1927), shortly before his death.
Two volumes of his letters are also included here. ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE: A LIFE IN LETTERS (2007) draws from intimate, private correspondence, detailing his life from his beginnings as a country doctor to his struggle with the success of Sherlock Holmes and his ultimate calling as the foremost spokesman for Spiritualism. LETTERS TO THE PRESS (1986) captures Doyle in the public arena as a vocal polemicist against legal injustices, alongside his passionate public stances on everything from military ballistics and the Boer War to divorce law reform. Together, these volumes reveal a man whose character and exploits rival that of his famous detective.
