Toby Jones’ foley artist finds himself unable to separate reality from the horror film he’s working on in Peter Strickland’s second feature.
Jones plays Gilderoy, an expert in creating sounds for film. His skill as a foley artist, using everything, from watermelons to raw meat, to replicate the sound of a grisly death, have made him a sought-after collaborator for horror directors. Which is why he finds himself in an Italian recording studio the post-synchronized soundtrack to a Giallo, The Equestrian Vortex, a tale of witchcraft and murder set inside an all-girl riding academy. But as Gilderoy begins to work on this unexpectedly terrifying project, it's his own mind that holds the real horrors. His sense of unease at being in this otherworldly place begins to manifest itself in a form of paranoia where life might be imitating art.

NOTE: The subtitles for this film are a bit difficult. The original Curzon/Artificial Eye blu-ray has subtitles only for the parts that are not in English. The new 2025 IFC Films blu-ray has English SDH subtitles but they only contain the English-language parts, the Italian parts are hardcoded into the video. The IFC subtitles also have big timing issues and they are all in CAPS, which I find distracting. So I've gone and created new corrected SRT subtitles which include all the dialogue, English and Italian. I also made an SDH option. If you need subtitles only for the Italian parts, I've included the Curzon subtitles and OCR'ed them to SRT too.
