Alice in the Cities

Alice in the Cities

DramaForeign

German journalist Philip Winter has a case of writer’s block when trying to write an article about the United States. He decides to return to Germany, and while trying to book a flight, encounters a German woman and her nine year old daughter Alice doing the same. The three become friends (almost out of necessity) and while the mother asks Winter to mind Alice temporarily, it quickly becomes apparent that Alice will be his responsibility for longer than he expected. After returning to Europe, the innocent friendship between Winter and Alice grows as they travel together through various European cities on a quest for Alice’s grandmother.

The first in Wenders’ “road-movie trilogy,” Alice in the Cities is a moving exploration of cross-generational friendship, family, and alienation. German journalist Philip (Rüdiger Vogler) drifts across America taking Polaroids instead of writing his commissioned magazine piece. Boarding his return flight to Europe, he reluctantly finds himself charged with the care of a stranger, the feisty young Alice (Yella Rottländer), whose mother promises to meet up with the pair in Amsterdam. When she doesn’t turn up, Philip takes Alice on a journey across Germany in search of the girl’s grandmother. Though infused with a melancholic sense of loss (both personal and cultural) and taking an ambivalent view of the faceless modernity sweeping across both America and Europe, Alice in the Cities finds hope in the very act of filmmaking itself: “the sad spectacle of old Europe vanishing through a windshield is mitigated by the artist’s continuous pursuit of the right image, by one generation’s disenchantment grudgingly buoyed by another’s hopes and appetites, by the sight of Chuck Berry rocking on stage” (Fernando Croce).
