* Charlotte, Emily, and Anne BRONTE - Collected Works and Letters (44 books)
THE BRONTË SISTERS —Charlotte, Emily, and Anne—are one of the most celebrated literary families in English literature. Growing up in the isolated parsonage of Haworth in Yorkshire, the children made little attempt to mix with others outside the parsonage and relied on each other for company, creating vivid imaginary worlds that later evolved into groundbreaking adult fiction. To overcome Victorian prejudices against female authors, they initially published their masterpieces under the male pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. Though their lives were tragically cut short by illness, their collective work forever altered the landscape of the English novel.
CHARLOTTE BRONTË (1816–1855) , the eldest of the trio to survive into adulthood, achieved immediate fame with her masterpiece, JANE EYRE (1847). This revolutionary novel introduced a fiercely independent, plain heroine who demanded emotional and moral equality, challenging contemporary class and gender norms. Charlotte followed this success with SHIRLEY (1849), a socially conscious novel exploring industrial unrest and the plight of unmarried women, and VILLETTE (1853), a deeply psychological, semi-autobiographical tale of unrequited love and isolation experienced by an English teacher in a fictional Belgian city. Her first novel, THE PROFESSOR , written in 1846 before Jane Eyre and initially rejected by publishers, was published posthumously in 1857. THE EARLY WRITINGS OF CHARLOTTE BRONTË (1987–1991), edited by Christine Alexander, is a comprehensive, multi-volume scholarly collection that meticulously transcribes Charlotte's surviving juvenile manuscripts directly from her original, microscopic notebooks. THE POEMS OF CHARLOTTE BRONTË: A NEW TEXT AND COMMENTARY (1985), edited by Victor Neufeldt, is the definitive reference work for her verse.
EMILY BRONTË (1818–1848) , the most reclusive and enigmatic sister, penned only one novel, but it secured her an enduring legacy. WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1847) is a fierce, poetic masterpiece that subverted traditional Victorian morality with its intense exploration of passion, revenge, and the supernatural. Set against the bleak Yorkshire moors, the turbulent relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw shocked early critics with its raw emotional violence and complex narrative structure, eventually earning its place as one of the greatest gothic love stories in history. Emily's COMPLETE POEMS was most recently edited by Janet Gezari (1992, 2010).
ANNE BRONTË (1820–1849 ), often unjustly overshadowed by her older sisters, was a radical and courageous realist who addressed systemic social injustices head-on. Her debut novel, AGNES GREY (1847), drew from her own painful experiences to expose the routine humiliation and vulnerability faced by Victorian governesses. She followed this with her magnum opus, THE TENANT OF WILDFELL HALL (1848), a bold and controversial critique of marital law and alcoholism that shocked contemporary society by depicting a woman fleeing an abusive husband to protect her son and live independently as an artist. The definitive scholarly compilation of her poetry, complete with thorough textual notes, is THE POEMS OF ANNE BRONTË: A NEW TEXT AND COMMENTARY (1979), edited by Edward Chitham.
No standalone, comprehensive volume dedicated exclusively to the letters of Anne Brontë or Emily Brontë has ever been published by a major academic press. This is due to a stark historical reality: Emily has only seven surviving letters (mostly brief notes or diary papers), and Anne has only around nine surviving letters alongside a handful of shared diary papers. Because of this limited material, post-1940 editions of their letters have exclusively appeared within scholarly editions centered on Charlotte Brontë, the gold standard for which is the 3-volume edition of THE LETTERS OF CHARLOTTE BRONTË (1995–2004), edited by the renowned scholar Margaret Smith. These letters document Charlotte's profound grief following the rapid deaths of her siblings, her struggles with fame, and her sharp critiques of Victorian society. Through her correspondence, Charlotte emerges not just as a distant literary icon, but as a fiercely intellectual, deeply vulnerable woman navigating the rigid constraints of her era.
