* Anne Carson - Nobel Prize in Literature, 2026 (22 books)
ANNE CARSON (b. 1950) is a Canadian poet, essayist, translator, and professor of Classics. Trained as a classicist, and with an interest in comparative literature, anthropology, history, and the arts, Carson fuses ideas and themes from many fields in her writing. Many of her books blur traditional genre boundaries, blending the forms of poetry, essay, prose, criticism, translation, dramatic dialogue, fiction, and non-fiction to varying degrees. She has earned prestigious accolades including the MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship and the T.S. Eliot Prize, culminating in the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature "for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature."
Carson first captured widespread critical attention with EROS THE BITTERSWEET (1986), a groundbreaking work of creative non-fiction and literary criticism that explores the nature of desire as a simultaneous experience of pleasure and pain best exemplified by "glukupikron", a word of Sappho's creation and the "bittersweet" of the book's title. She writes of a "stereoscopic vision" that allows one to "hold in equipoise two perspectives at once". Another case in point is the essay ECONOMY OF THE UNLOST (1999), in which Carson sets the ancient Greek poet Simonides of Keos against Paul Celan, and MEN IN THE OFF HOURS (2000), a hybrid collection of poems and prose pieces in which she aligns the historian Thucydides with Virginia Woolf.
She solidified her reputation as a masterful poet with GLASS, IRONY AND GOD (1995), a collection of three narrative poems containing "The Glass Essay," a 36-page epic that interweaves the end of a romantic relationship with musings on Emily Brönte. Her best-known work, AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF RED (1998), a novel in verse inspired by the surviving fragments of a poem by Stesichoros, reimagined the myth of the red monster Geryon as a coming-of-age story in twentieth-century Canada. This was later followed by its companion piece, RED DOC> (2013), which catches up with the characters, under different names, later in life.
THE BEAUTY OF THE HUSBAND: A FICTIONAL ESSAY IN 29 TANGENTS (2001) is an award-winning verse novel that chronicles the dissolution of a marriage. Another eclectic work, DECREATION (2005), is comprised of short lyrics, a screenplay, oratorio, and long prose sections that combine literary criticism with philosophical investigation. It received high praise from all quarters and Fiona Sampson, reviewing the book for the Guardian, described Carson as "one of the most idiosyncratic intelligences at work in contemporary literature".
As a renowned translator, Carson has breathed new life into classical texts, treating translation not as a passive act but as an active dialogue with antiquity. She has published translations of ten ancient Greek tragedies – one by Aeschylus (Agamemnon), two by Sophocles (Antigone, Electra), and seven by Euripides (Alcestis, Hecuba, Herakles, Hippolytus, Iphigenia in Tauris, Orestes, and The Bacchae) – as well as the poetry of Sappho in English.
Across her entire body of work, Carson defies simple categorization. Whether she is publishing uncollected short pieces like her most recent work, WRONG NORMA (2024), or weaving together scholarship and art, her writings challenge readers to think deeply about language, memory, and loss. By treating the ancient past not as a relic but as a living, breathing landscape, Carson continues to expand the possibilities of what contemporary literature can achieve.
