"The war has begun.
Two cops, R and Noma, hunt down renegade cyborgs. Cyborgs are used as commandos by the military, as lust objects and for companionship. Normaly they have a limited lifespan of three years but black market technology is being developed to be able to transfer a cyborg’s artificial intelligence into human host. This drives R to find a suitable host for his expiring cyborg Ria."


One of the lesser known genres in Korean cinema is Sci-fi, and I will admit that they have a long way to go in making great Sci-fi productions, but nevertheless, Natural City is an intriguing and captivating film that really excels in the atmosphere and environment it puts you in. It feels lived-in and grimy, with a cyberpunk grungy feel - something that works really well as a template for any potential Sci-fi. I particularly loved the attention to detail in the slums and ghetto areas.

Set in the year 2080, the plot focuses on highly advanced cyborgs which only have a life expectancy of 3 years. The main protagonist, R, is torn between his love for this dying cyborg and his duty as a police detective. As a result, R is forced to make some difficult decisions involving the cyborg underworld, leading to amazing fight scenes, visuals and dialogue which leads you to questioning what really makes you human?

Albeit, some elements seem borrowed from Sci-fi hits such as Blade Runner but this settles fine with me; in making a good Sci-fi one must study from the best examples. Regardless, I don't regret my decision on watching this and will definitely keep my eye out for more Sci-fi's coming out of Korea in the next few years - they seem to be learning quickly.
