* Lao Tzu / Laozi - The Tao Te Ching / Dao De Jing (46 books)

THE TAO TE CHING or DAO DE JING [lit. "Classic of the Way and its Virtue"]
is an ancient Chinese classic text and the foundational masterpiece of Taoism / Daoism. It is traditionally credited to the sage LAO TZU / LAOZI (c. 770 – c. 481 BCE), though with some several early versions recovered, the texts' authorship and dates of composition and compilation are debated.  It is one of the most translated texts in world literature.

The Tao Te Ching is central to both philosophical and religious Taoism, and has been highly influential on Chinese philosophy and religious practice in general. Composed of 81 brief, poetic chapters, it outlines a philosophy centered on living in harmony with the Tao—the ultimate, indefinable source and flow of all existence. It is unseen, but not transcendent, immensely powerful yet supremely humble, being the root of all things. Rather than offering rigid laws, the text advocates for humility, simplicity, and wu-wei, the art of effortless action or non-forcing, showing how yielding can overcome strength and how emptiness can hold the greatest utility.

The text is structurally divided into two distinct sections that reflect its title: the Tao Ching (Chapters 1–37) and the Te Ching (Chapters 38–81). The first half focuses primarily on the metaphysical nature of the cosmic Way, describing it as a nameless, eternal force that preceded the universe. The second half shifts toward Te/De, often translated as virtue or inner power, which explores how a person or leader can embody the Way through practical, quiet wisdom in everyday life and governance. Together, these sections use paradox, nature imagery, and poetic verse to challenge conventional human ambition and societal constructs.

More than 100 English translations of the Tao Te Ching have appeared since 1900, with broader estimates ranging up to 175 or more total versions depending on how academic editions, poetic adaptations, and self-published interpretations are counted. Many translations have been written by people with a foundation in Chinese language and philosophy who have been trying to render the original meaning of the text as faithfully as possible into English. Some of the more popular translations, however, are written from a less scholarly perspective, giving an individual author's interpretation; critics of these versions claim that they deviate from the text and are incompatible with the history of Chinese thought. Other scholars argue that, while these versions do not pretend to scholarship, they meet a real spiritual need in the West; they aim to make the wisdom of the Tao Te Ching more accessible to modern English-speaking readers by, typically, employing more familiar cultural and temporal references.
