Plot Summary
In 1936, Indiana Jones, an American archaeologist and globe-trotting adventurer, is recruited by U.S. Army intelligence to locate an ancient artifact, the biblical Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis can obtain it and use its legendary power to turn the tide of the war.

Trivia: The film was conceived by Lucas as a modern homage to the adventure serials he enjoyed as a child, particularly their fast-paced stories, cliffhangers and larger-than-life heroes. Tom Selleck was originally cast as Indiana Jones but was unable to take the role because of his commitment to Magnum, P.I., allowing Ford to step into the part.
The production also famously used a real tarantula scene, extensive practical effects and large-scale sets to create its adventurous atmosphere.
