Walter is told by his boss, Sara, to deliver an urgent letter to Henri de Corinthe. On the way he finds a beautiful woman he had been eying in a nightclub, lying in the road, bound up. He takes her to a villa to get a doctor, and ends up being locked in a bedroom with her. While she is making love to him, he has visions of surrealistic images from René Magritte's paintings. In the morning, the girl, Marie-Ange, has vanished, the villa looks derelict, and his neck is bleeding. Was it all just a nightmare?
NOTE: There is a glitch in the video at 00:45:21. It's also in the source remux but this was the only source I could find for this film so I opted to use it. The glitch threw the audio out of sync for the rest of the film but I did some re-timing work and it should be okay now. Also the main audio is labelled as Latin instead of French, sorry about that too, I forgot to change it for the final version.
La Belle Captive is a mesmerizing erotic fantasy, set in a world in which film noir and horror converge—an alternate reality governed by the fractured continuity of a nightmare. After encountering a mysterious woman at a smoke-filled nightclub, secret agent Walter Raim finds the woman lying bound and semi-conscious on a country road. He takes her to an isolated mansion, where a group of mysterious men have gathered. In the morning, Walter awakens to find bite marks on his neck, and embarks on a one-man crusade to unravel the mystery.
Inspired by the imagery of René Magritte and the episodic melodramas of Louis Feuillade, La Belle Captive is a playful homage to the erotic allure of cinema, filled with fetishistic imagery that has become Robbe-Grillet’s trademark.
