A wild, stylish, and utterly offbeat Japanese cult classic from director Katsuhito Ishii (in his feature debut). Based on the manga by Minetarō Mochizuki, this hyper-kinetic action-comedy-crime romp follows the chaotic road trip of Kuroo Samehada (Tadanobu Asano), a slick thief who’s stolen a fortune from the yakuza, and Toshiko Momojiri (Shie Kohinata), a young woman fleeing her sexually obsessive and deranged uncle.
After a spectacular car crash brings them together, the unlikely pair goes on the run across Japan, pursued by a colorful cast of eccentric gangsters, hitmen, a gun-crazy mercenary, and other bizarre characters, including a straight-laced knife expert, a fashion-obsessed mafia prince, and a silent mob queen who speaks through cigarettes.
Equal parts True Romance and Reservoir Dogs with a distinctly Japanese pop-punk twist, the film is packed with surreal visuals, dark humor, over-the-top violence, and unforgettable characters. A cult favorite among fans of quirky Asian cinema.
