Plot

Makoto Kido is a disillusioned high school science teacher in Tokyo. After getting caught up in a dramatic school bus hijacking (and emerging as an unlikely hero), he decides to take drastic action against a society he has grown to despise.

Kido steals plutonium from a nuclear power plant and single-handedly builds a working atomic bomb in his apartment. Calling himself “Number 9”, he uses his homemade nuke to blackmail the Japanese government with a series of increasingly absurd demands — including nonstop baseball games and a concert by the then-banned Rolling Stones.

Hot on his trail is the no-nonsense veteran police inspector Yamashita. What follows is a tense, darkly comic cat-and-mouse game between two very different men from two very different generations.

A unique blend of crime thriller, political satire, and character drama with a heavy dose of 1970s Japanese counterculture. Long considered a cult classic in Japan and among fans of offbeat cinema.
