Synopsis:
Spanning three turbulent decades of 20th-century German history, Kurt Barnert (Tom Schilling) is a young, deeply talented artist growing up in East Germany under the shadow of World War II and the subsequent Soviet communist occupation. Haunted by the childhood trauma of losing his beloved, eccentric Aunt Elisabeth to the Nazi euthanasia program, Kurt falls in love with a beautiful fashion student, Ellie Seeband (Paula Beer). However, their romance is fiercely opposed by Ellie's father, Professor Carl Seeband (Sebastian Koch), a high-ranking, unrepentant former Nazi gynecologist who harbors a horrific, hidden role in the very eugenics program that destroyed Kurt's aunt.
