Gloomy Sunday (1999)

Original title: Ein Lied von Liebe und Tod (Gloomy Sunday - A Song of Love and Death)

Directed by Rolf Schübel | Based on the acclaimed novel by Nick Barkow

A haunting, beautifully melancholic, and tragic wartime romance revolving around the legendary curse of a song

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Synopsis:
In the vibrant, pre-WWII city of Budapest, László Szabó (Joachim Król), a charming and perceptive Jewish restaurateur, runs a highly successful establishment with the help of his stunningly beautiful, ethereal mistress, Ilona (Erika Marozsán). Desiring to elevate the restaurant's atmosphere, they hire András Aradi (Stefano Dionisi), a quiet, intensely talented young pianist. András soon composes a deeply melancholic, mesmerizing instrumental piece titled "Gloomy Sunday" dedicated to Ilona, which immediately sparks a sweeping, tragic wave of romantic unrequited obsession—and a mysterious epidemic of suicides across the city. The three individuals form a harmonious, delicate, and deeply unconventional menage-à-trois built on mutual respect and affection. However, their poetic world is violently shattered when Hans Wieck (Ben Becker), a regular German customer who was once rejected by Ilona, returns years later as a powerful, ruthless Nazi SS officer tasked with implementing the Holocaust in Hungary, turning the haunting song into an inescapable curse of fate.
