* Ernest Hemingway - Nobel Prize in Literature, 1954 (57 books)
ERNEST HEMINGWAY (1899–1961) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and journalist whose works have become classics of American literature. Celebrated for an economical, understated style that stripped away ornate adjectives in favour of lean, hard-hitting prose, he has been romanticized for his adventurous lifestyle and outspoken, blunt public image. Hemingway was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style."
His early novels established him as the voice of the "Lost Generation," a group of traumatised young people searching for meaning after the Great War. He achieved widespread literary acclaim with THE SUN ALSO RISES (1926), which captured the aimless lives of expatriates in post-war Europe. He followed this success with A FAREWELL TO ARMS (1929), a tragic love story set against the backdrop of the Italian front during World War I, heavily drawing from his own wartime injuries. His later masterpiece, FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS (1940), explored the brutality and ideological struggles of the Spanish Civil War through the eyes of an American volunteer.
Beyond his longer narratives, Hemingway was a master of the short story form, where his minimalist style truly shone. His early talent was on display in IN OUR TIME (1925), a collection that introduced Nick Adams, a recurring semi-autobiographical character navigating childhood and the trauma of war. He solidified his reputation as a premier short fiction writer with MEN WITHOUT WOMEN (1927) and WINNER TAKE NOTHING (1933). THE COMPLETE SHORT STORIES: THE FINCA VIGÍA EDITION is the authoritative collection of all Hemingway's short fiction, including classic stories like "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," "The Killers," "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place," and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," along with seven previously unpublished stories. THE SHORT STORIES OF ERNEST HEMINGWAY (2017), an annotated edition selected by the author’s grandson Seán, presents many of the most famous stories alongside rare and unpublished material: Hemingway’s early drafts and correspondence, a dazzling out-of-print essay on the art of the short story, and two marvellous examples of his earliest work.
Hemingway was also an avid journalist and essayist, producing significant works of non-fiction that mirrored his personal passions, chronicling a lifelong quest to test human endurance against absolute limits. He explored the artistry and philosophy of Spanish bullfighting in DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON (1932), treating the spectacle as a profound meditation on life and mortality. In GREEN HILLS OF AFRICA (1935), he turned his journalistic eye toward the ethics of hunting and the pristine majesty of the wilderness, using the landscape to contemplate the role of the writer. Decades later, the posthumously released A MOVEABLE FEAST (1964) provided a lyrical, bittersweet look back at his youth, capturing both the vibrant artistic energy of 1920s Paris and the personal betrayals that broke his early world apart.
The final act of his career solidified his mythic status while revealing the immense toll of his lifestyle. THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA (1952) served as a triumphant response to critics who claimed his talent was spent, detailing an aging Cuban fisherman's epic struggle with a giant marlin. The lean novella won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and played a pivotal role in Hemingway receiving the Nobel Prize in 1954. Although his final years were clouded by severe physical decline, paranoia, and the tragic depression that ended his life in 1961, his lean cadence and uncompromising worldview remain permanently etched into the fabric of global literature.
The ambitious HEMINGWAY LETTERS PROJECT (Cambridge, 2011–present) is in the process of producing a comprehensive scholarly edition of the author's some 6,000 letters, some 85% of them never before published. The edition is projected to include seventeen volumes, the first five of which (covering 1907–1934) are included here. Beyond illuminating Hemingway’s personal life and literary development, the volumes offer a vivid eyewitness chronicle of the cultural and political upheavals of the twentieth century, revealing the writer in voices far more intimate, playful, vulnerable, and intellectually engaged than the public myth of “Papa Hemingway” has often allowed.
