BEST LITERARY TRANSLATIONS is a new, annual anthology from Deep Velum Publishing that celebrates world literatures in English translation. Spotlighting work from top literary journals, the series honors the excellent literature created every year by a diverse range of authors and translators and showcases the bold and brilliant work of contemporary translators and editors.
Each of the three volumes published to-date feature both contemporary and historical poetry and prose originally written in foreign languages—including some not commonly seen in U.S. translations—brought into English by the most talented translators working today. Each pairs a notable guest editor—such as Jane Hirshfield (2024), Cristina Rivera Garza (2025), and Arthur Sze (2026)—with selections from hundreds of journal submissions across dozens of original languages, operating as a project against cultural insularity. Each selection is accompanied by a translator’s note reflecting on the discovery, translation, and resonance of the original work.
The anthologies have juxtaposed widely spoken languages with critically endangered or rarely translated tongues, including Old Egyptian, Xitsonga, Tigrinya, Wayuu, Kurdish, Guaraní, and Burmese. Critics from platforms like the North American Review and World Literature Today have lauded the series as a vibrant cultural hub and a vital political and aesthetic advocate for the translation community. For enthusiasts of literature in translation and newcomers to global literary traditions alike, Best Literary Translations offers a glimpse into essential writing from many corners of the world.
