Produced by B.R. Chopra and directed by Ravi Chopra (the same legendary duo behind
the iconic Mahabharat 1988), Vishnu Puran is based on the Bhagavata Purana and covers
the 10 divine incarnations (Dashavatara) of Lord Vishnu — from Matsya (the fish) and
Kurma (the turtle) through Narasimha, Vamana, Parshuram, Rama, and Krishna — along
with stories of Dhruva, Prahlad, King Bali, and the Samudra Manthan (churning of the
ocean). The series first aired on Zee TV on 23 January 2000 and later on DD National
and DD Bharati. It reached the Top 5 on all-India ratings and was praised by The Hindu
as a series that "really overwhelmed us."
