Trama:

1926. Einar e Gerda Wegener, una coppia sposata di Copenaghen follemente innamorata, hanno cercato invano di avere un figlio. Entrambi lavorano come artisti e, mentre Einar ha ottenuto un discreto successo di critica con i suoi paesaggi, Gerda non ha avuto altrettanto successo con i suoi ritratti. Una richiesta apparentemente innocente di Gerda al marito porta Einar a esplorare il suo lato femminile. Mentre Gerda vede questa esplorazione come un semplice gioco, per Einar assume un significato più profondo, il quale, rievocando un lontano passato, si convince finalmente di essere una donna, "Lili", nata in un corpo maschile. Desidera vivere appieno l'esperienza di Lili, anche sessualmente, e non fingere di essere donna. Le emozioni che Gerda prova quando scopre cosa sta realmente vivendo Einar stimolano una nuova energia creativa nella sua arte, prima assente. Alla ricerca di una diagnosi medica per ciò che prova, Lili si sente ripetutamente dire che è pazza, con la maggior parte dei medici che vorrebbero internarla immediatamente, finché non incontra il dottor Kurt Warnekros, il quale crede di poter eseguire due rischiosi interventi chirurgici di riassegnazione di genere per permetterle di diventare a tutti gli effetti Lili. Pertanto, Lili sogna di risposarsi e avere un figlio dopo l'intervento. Sia Lili che Gerda devono decidere per quanto tempo Gerda asseconderà Lili in questo percorso, soprattutto perché entrambe sanno che, se ciò accadrà, Gerda perderà per sempre suo marito, e Lili precisa che con questo intende tutto ciò che appartiene a Einar, compresa la sua arte.
