PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY (1792–1822)
was a foundational English Romantic poet known for the sweeping momentum of his poetic imagery, his mastery of genres and verse forms, and the complex interplay of sceptical, idealist, and materialist ideas in his work. As a passionate rebel against religious, social, and political authority, his work embodies the romantic quest for freedom, intellectual beauty, and utopian change, often featuring ethereal imagery and passionate intensity.

Shelley’s poetry ranges from profound political satire to visionary lyrical drama. His major works include the verse drama "Prometheus Unbound" (1820), representing the liberation of humanity, and the elegy "Adonais" (1821) for John Keats, revealing a poet capable of blending complex classical mythology with contemporary revolutionary ideals. Renowned shorter poems such as "Ozymandias" (1818)—a meditation on the inevitable decay of power—"Ode to the West Wind" , and "To a Skylark" define his ability to blend nature with high philosophical thought.

Shelley was also a formidable writer of prose, often using the medium to articulate his provocative theories on society and art. His essay "The Necessity of Atheism" (1811) famously led to his expulsion from Oxford, while his more mature work, "A Defence of Poetry" (1820, published 1841) remains one of the most influential pieces of literary criticism in the English language. In it, he famously claimed that "poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world," arguing that the imagination is the primary engine of moral and social progress. Other notable prose include various essays on love, life, and social reform.

Shelley’s personal LETTERS provide an intimate window into creative process, intellectual development, and deep emotional life, particularly those to his wife, Mary Shelley, and friends like Lord Byron and Leigh Hunt. These letters, particularly those written during his exile in Italy, reveal a man of immense erudition and empathy, grappling with personal tragedy, financial instability, and the isolation that came with his "outcast" status from British society. Together, Shelley's poetry, prose and letters paint a picture of a restless, idealistic spirit who believed that language could reshape reality. Though he died tragically young at the age of 29, his influence has endured, inspiring generations of later poets, philosophers, and political reformers.
