A product of the FEKS (Factory of the Eccentric Actor) group, a radical arts collective led by Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg (who co-directed this film), FEKS productions combined aspects of circus, music hall, puppet show and American silent comedy. With Gogol’s tragicomic story, The Overcoat, FEKS found fertile ground for experimentation.


The night is endless, the shadows demonic black, the snow gloomy white, the decor menacing, the gestures exhilarated, the emotional eruption in the faces acrobatic. Gogol's coat in a film that handles artificiality to such an extreme as if it were a fantastic caricature of itself. Instead of understatement: exaggeration. Instead of decency: long live expression!
