The 16 mm short films ...Remote... Remote.... and Man & Woman & Animal (both 1973) can best be understood in tandem with the trilogy of sicknesses described above, since they depict the body as the field of psychosocial investigation. More personal than the performances, the films deal, respectively, with pain and pleasure. Both are, in a sense, performances for film. ...Remote... Remote... is shot against a backdrop of a large police archive photo of two children who were taken away from their parents because of abuse. Export is seated in front of this photo with a bowl of milk on her lap. After the initial identification between the children and the performer, which is established as the camera cuts from the pupil of the child's eye to the pupil of the performer's eye, the action itself begins. With an Exacto knife, the performer first cuts the cuticles around her fingernails, but soon it becomes clear that this is not a cosmetic but rather a destructive activity, as the knife burrows deeper and deeper into the skin surrounding the fingernail. Blood begins to flow pro-fusely and is periodically washed off in the bowl of milk held between her knees. In its visceral plasticity, this performance most clearly illustrates an aspect of much of Export's body work, namely, the externalization of internal states, a transfer of a deep psychology into deep tissue, as it were. The same preoccupation with rendering the unconscious visible characterizes Man & Woman & Animal, only here it is a question of investigating woman's pleasure. Two of the most tabooed images, orgasmic and menstruating female genitals, are displayed, in close-ups and medium shots, as candidly and matter-of-factly as the production of pain in ...Remote... Remote... If patriarchal power is indeed predicated on the register of the visible, these two films are serious incursions into the mythological preserve from Dionysus to Christ that had granted women only auxiliary roles in the orgiastic display of pleasure and pain.
