* Jules Verne - Collected Works (48 books)
JULES VERNE (1828–1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright whose imagination helped define modern science fiction. Writing during the height of nineteenth-century scientific optimism, Verne fused adventure narratives with contemporary advances in science, geography, and technology. His fiction avoided the supernatural in favor of speculative extrapolation, asking how far human ingenuity and engineering might go if pushed to their logical extremes. This blend of instruction and entertainment made his novels both accessible and intellectually ambitious.
Verne’s reputation rests largely on his Voyages extraordinaires (1863–1905), a loosely connected series of bestselling adventure novels and stories intended to "outline all the geographical, geological, physical, and astronomical knowledge amassed by modern science." These works often follow daring protagonists—explorers, scientists, engineers—who embark on journeys to unknown or extreme environments. Early successes included FIVE WEEKS IN A BALLOON (1863), which used an African expedition to explore advances in aeronautics and cartography, and JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (1864), a geological fantasy which imagines a descent into a hidden subterranean world beneath the Earth’s crust.
Many of Verne’s most enduring works focus on new modes of travel and transportation. TWENTY THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA (1870) imagined electric submarines decades before they became practical, while AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS (1873) dramatized the effects of steam power, railroads, and global timekeeping on modern life. Later novels such as FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON (1865) and AROUND THE MOON (1870) offered remarkably detailed visions of space travel, including launch mechanics, orbital motion, and the psychological experience of spaceflight.
Verne’s influence extends far beyond his own era. He is considered an important author in France and most of Europe, where he has had a wide influence on the literary avant-garde and on surrealism. His reputation was markedly different in the Anglosphere where he had often been labeled a writer of genre fiction or children's books, largely because of the highly abridged and altered translations in which his novels have often been printed. Although these older, deficient translations continue to be republished due to their public domain status (I'm looking at you, Delphi Classics), since the mid-1980s a considerable number of more accurate English translations have appeared.
