* Howard Zinn - Collected Works (45 books)

HOWARD ZINN (1922–2010)
was an American historian, playwright, and social activist whose work reshaped how many readers understand the United States’ past. A veteran of World War II and longtime professor at Boston University, Zinn became one of the most influential voices in progressive historiography. He challenged traditional narratives that centered political leaders and military triumphs, instead foregrounding the experiences of workers, women, African Americans, Indigenous peoples, and other marginalized groups. His scholarship and activism were closely intertwined, reflecting his involvement in the civil rights and anti–Vietnam War movements.

Zinn’s most celebrated work, A PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES (1980), offered a sweeping reinterpretation of American history from the perspective of ordinary people rather than elites. Zinn argued that struggles over power, class, and inequality are central to the national story, highlighting the resistance and achievements of Indigenous peoples, enslaved Africans, women, laborers, and other marginalized groups. Widely adopted in high schools and colleges, it sold millions of copies and sparked both admiration and controversy for its openly critical stance toward American institutions and policies.

Before this landmark publication, Zinn had already established himself as a provocative scholar. His early book LAGUARDIA IN CONGRESS (1959) examined the congressional career of Fiorello LaGuardia, highlighting tensions between reform and political power. In SNCC: THE NEW ABOLITIONISTS (1964), Zinn chronicled the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, drawing on his firsthand experiences as an adviser to the group during the civil rights movement. Later, in THE POLITICS OF HISTORY (1970), he articulated his philosophy of history, arguing that complete objectivity is neither possible nor desirable and that historians should acknowledge their moral commitments.

Zinn also brought his historical vision to broader audiences through essays, speeches, edited collections, and drama. His collections of essays, including DECLARATIONS OF INDEPENDENCE (1990) and PASSIONATE DECLARATIONS (2003), gathered his reflections on war, civil disobedience, and the responsibilities of citizens in a democracy. His play MARX IN SOHO (1999) imagined Karl Marx returning to the modern world to defend his ideas, blending scholarship with accessible political theater. Newcomers to his work can start with the "essential" writings brought together in THE ZINN READER (2009) and THE INDISPENSABLE ZINN (2012). Across his varied works, Zinn consistently sought to democratize history, insisting that understanding past struggles for justice could inspire contemporary movements for social change.
