Sedgwick traces the decades-long rivalry between Hamilton (energetic Federalist, Treasury Secretary) and Burr (brooding Democratic-Republican, Vice President) from New York lawyers clashing in courts and politics to their July 11, 1804, duel on Weehawken's Hudson bluff. Fueled by personal slights, power struggles, and ideological divides shaping America's future, Hamilton viewed Burr as a national threat beyond rivalry. The narrative draws on letters—including Hamilton's pre-duel note to Sedgwick's ancestor—for insight into motivations, culminating in Hamilton's death and Burr's fugitive status.
