Full title: Pendergast: The Beginning

Genre/Categories: Fiction; Thriller; Crime; Supernatural-tinged procedural; Agent Pendergast series #23 (origin story)
The novel is an origin story set in Pendergast’s early 1990s FBI years, pairing the eerily self‑possessed young A.X.L. Pendergast with seasoned but shattered Special Agent Dwight Chambers, who is reeling from the deaths of his partner and his wife. After Pendergast commits an “outrageous” move that gets them both suspended, he drags Chambers to Mississippi to look into an odd homicide that has caught his interest, only for them to uncover a string of ritualistic murders that fit no known serial‑killer profile. They eventually identify and catch the killer thanks to Pendergast’s brilliance and unorthodox methods, but once the apparent resolution comes, a deeper and more disturbing horror reveals itself, laying the groundwork for the investigator he becomes in Relic and the later series.
