The book is a concise history of Germany’s elite Gebirgsjäger, officially formed in 1935 after Hitler abandoned the Treaty of Versailles but rooted in pre‑war Alpine climbing clubs that cultivated mountain‑warfare skills. Lepage follows their service on every front—from Lapland and the Balkans to the Caucasus, Italy, and Tunisia—then details their recruitment from Bavaria, Württemberg, and Austria, their rigorous training in skiing and climbing, distinctive Edelweiss insignia, organization, equipment, and tactics, with extensive uniform and equipment art drawn by the author.
