LUDWIG  WITTGENSTEIN (1889–1951) was one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century, whose work reshaped large areas of logic, philosophy of language, and the philosophy of mind.  His thought is distinctive not only for its depth and originality but also for the dramatic shift between his early and later philosophies.  Across his career, he was preoccupied with how language relates to reality and how philosophical problems arise from misunderstandings of language.

Wittgenstein’s early philosophy is most famously expressed in his first major work, TRACTATUS LOGICO-PHILOSOPHICUS (1921). In this book, he argues that the structure of language mirrors the structure of the world, and that meaningful propositions are those that picture facts.  The "Tractatus" aims to set clear limits to what can be meaningfully said, claiming that many traditional philosophical questions—about ethics, metaphysics, and religion—lie beyond these limits.  Wittgenstein famously concludes that what cannot be spoken about clearly must be passed over in silence.

After a long break from academic philosophy, Wittgenstein returned with ideas that sharply criticized his earlier views.  These later ideas are developed most fully in PHILOSOPHICAL INVESTIGATIONS (published posthumously in 1953), where he rejects the idea that language has a single underlying logical structure.  Instead, he introduces the concept of “language games,” emphasizing that meaning arises from use within specific social and practical contexts.  According to this view, philosophical confusion occurs when words are taken out of the everyday practices that give them sense.

In addition to his two major books, Wittgenstein’s later thought is developed in several important posthumous works, including REMARKS ON THE FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS (1956), THE BLUE AND BROWN BOOKS (1958), and ON CERTAINTY (1969).  These texts address a wide range of issues such as rule-following, the possibility of a private language, the nature of mathematical proof, and the grounds of knowledge and doubt.
