* Plato - Complete Philosophical Works (113 books)
PLATO (c. 428–348 BCE) was an ancient Greek philosopher who is considered a foundational thinker in Western philosophy and an innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms. A student of Socrates and teacher of Aristotle, Plato wrote in the aftermath of Athens' political collapse and Socrates' execution, experiences that deeply shaped his philosophical outlook. Rather than presenting philosophy as a technical discipline, Plato conceived it as a way of life oriented toward the pursuit of truth, justice, and the good. His works explore how human beings can achieve knowledge and moral clarity in a world marked by change, opinion, and political instability.
Plato's philosophical vision is inseparable from his distinctive literary form: the dialogue. With few exceptions, his works are written as dramatic conversations, often featuring Socrates as the central interlocutor, engaging others in dialectical inquiry. This form reflects Plato's conviction that philosophy advances through questioning rather than dogmatic assertion. Across dialogues such as the APOLOGY , EUTHYPHRO , and MENO , Plato examines ethical concepts like piety, virtue, and knowledge, frequently exposing the inadequacy of conventional opinions while leaving conclusions deliberately open-ended.
At the center of Plato's mature thought lies the theory of Forms, most fully articulated in dialogues such as the REPUBLIC , PHAEDO , and SYMPOSIUM . According to this view, the objects of true knowledge are not the mutable things of sensory experience but eternal, intelligible Forms—such as Justice, Beauty, and Equality—of which sensible particulars are imperfect instances. The Republic integrates this metaphysical framework with epistemology and political philosophy, presenting the famous allegory of the cave and an account of the philosopher-ruler as one who ascends from opinion to knowledge of the Good, the highest Form and ultimate source of intelligibility and value.
Plato's later dialogues, including the THEAETETUS , PARMENIDES , SOPHIST , and LAWS , reveal a philosopher continually reexamining and refining his positions. These works probe the nature of knowledge, being, and non-being, and explore more practical and institutional approaches to law and governance. Taken as a whole, Plato's corpus combines metaphysics, ethics, political theory, and philosophical method into a unified project aimed at transforming both thought and life. His influence on subsequent philosophy—ancient, medieval, and modern—is so pervasive that later thinkers have often described Western philosophy itself as a series of footnotes to Plato.
