* G. W. F. Hegel - Complete Philosophical Works (69 books)
GEORG WILHELM FRIEDRICH HEGEL (1770–1831) was a German philosopher, a major figure in the tradition of German idealism, and one of the most influential and challenging philosophers of the modern era. Writing in the aftermath of the Enlightenment and amid the political upheavals of the French Revolution and Napoleonic era, Hegel sought nothing less than a systematic account of reality as a rational, self-developing whole. His philosophy is ambitious in scope, aiming to integrate logic, nature, history, politics, art, religion, and philosophy itself into a single framework.
One of Hegel’s earliest and most influential works is THE PHENOMENOLOGY OF SPIRIT (1807), which serves as both an introduction to his system and a dramatic account of the development of human consciousness. In this work, Hegel traces the “journey” of consciousness from basic sense experience through self-consciousness, reason, and spirit, culminating in what he calls absolute knowing. Each stage reveals internal contradictions that force consciousness to move beyond its previous standpoint. Famous sections such as the master–slave dialectic illustrate how self-consciousness emerges through social recognition, a theme that would become foundational for later philosophers.
Hegel’s mature logical system is presented in THE SCIENCE OF LOGIC (1812–1816), a dense and highly abstract work in which he examines the fundamental categories of thought itself. Rather than treating logic as a mere tool of reasoning, Hegel argues that logic reveals the basic structure of reality, since thought and being are ultimately inseparable. The work proceeds through the dialectical development of concepts such as being, nothing, becoming, essence, and the concept itself. This text forms the core of Hegel’s system and underlies his philosophy of nature and spirit.
Hegel later offered a more accessible overview of his philosophy in the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE PHILOSOPHICAL SCIENCES , which outlines his system in three parts: logic, philosophy of nature, and philosophy of spirit. Within the philosophy of spirit, Hegel develops his views on mind, society, and culture, many of which are expanded in THE PHILOSOPHY OF RIGHT (1820). In this political and social work, Hegel analyzes ethical life as embodied in the family, civil society, and the state, arguing that true freedom is achieved not in isolation but through participation in rational social institutions. Together with his posthumously published lectures on history, art, religion, and philosophy, Hegel’s works present an ambitious vision of reality as an intelligible, historical process.
Hegel's work shaped modern thought more deeply than that of almost any other nineteenth-century philosopher. Marxism, existentialism, psychoanalysis, and postmodernism have all engaged with Hegelian themes, sometimes adopting them, often reacting against them. His prose is notoriously difficult, filled with abstract terminology and long, often circular arguments. Yet for those willing to engage, Hegel offers a profound vision of reality as a dynamic, evolving totality, where contradictions are not failures of thought but expressions of deeper truth.
