* Immanuel Kant - Complete Philosophical Works (61 books)
IMMANUEL KANT (1724–1804) was a German philosopher and one of the central thinkers of the Enlightenment. His comprehensive and systematic works in epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, and aesthetics have made him one of the most influential and highly discussed figures in modern Western philosophy. Living and teaching in Königsberg for most of his life, Kant developed a systematic philosophy aimed at resolving deep tensions in early modern thought, especially between empiricism and rationalism. His writings are unified by a critical method that examines not simply what humans think about the world, but the conditions that make thinking, judging, and acting possible at all.
Kant’s philosophical system is centered on his three Critiques. THE CRITIQUE OF PURE REASON (1781; second edition 1787) analyzes the limits and capacities of theoretical knowledge, arguing that the mind actively structures experience through a priori forms and concepts, making science possible while restricting metaphysical speculation. THE CRITIQUE OF PRACTICAL REASON (1788) addresses morality, grounding ethical obligation in reason itself and articulating the authority of the moral law independently of desire or consequence. THE CRITIQUE OF JUDGMENT (1790) completes the system by examining aesthetic and teleological judgment, showing how experiences of beauty, sublimity, and purposiveness mediate between the deterministic world of nature and the domain of human freedom.
Beyond the Critiques, Kant’s moral philosophy is elaborated in the GROUNDWORK OF THE METAPHYSICS OF MORALS (1785), which introduces the categorical imperative, and in the METAPHYSICS OF MORALS (1797), which applies moral principles to law, rights, and virtue. His political and historical thought appears in influential essays such as WHAT IS ENLIGHTENMENT? (1784), where he defines enlightenment as humanity’s emergence from self-imposed immaturity, and PERPETUAL PEACE (1795), which outlines a rational foundation for international law and lasting peace among states.
Kant also wrote extensively on religion, anthropology, and human nature, notably in RELIGION WITHIN THE BOUNDS OF BARE REASON (1793) and ANTHROPOLOGY FROM A PRAGMATIC POINT OF VIEW (1798). These works, along with numerous essays, lectures, and scientific writings, demonstrate the remarkable breadth of his intellectual interests.
Taken as a whole, Kant’s corpus represents a sustained effort to chart the proper use of reason across all domains of human life, an effort that continues to shape philosophy and the humanities more than two centuries later. His ideas have been incorporated into a variety of schools of thought, including Marxism, positivism, phenomenology, existentialism, critical theory, linguistics, structuralism, post-structuralism, and deconstruction.
