* C. S. Lewis - Collected Works, incl. The Chronicles of Narnia (91 books)

CLIVE STAPLES LEWIS (1898 – 1963)
was a British writer, literary scholar, and Anglican lay theologian whose work bridged the academy and the general reader. Educated at Oxford and later a fellow of Magdalen College, Lewis was a formidable medievalist, yet his reputation rests equally on his ability to communicate complex moral, theological, and philosophical ideas with clarity and narrative force. His conversion from atheism to Christianity in the early 1930s became a decisive intellectual event that shaped much of his subsequent writing, without narrowing its literary appeal or imaginative range.

Lewis’s fiction is varied in genre and ambition. He is best known for THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA (1950–56), a sequence of children’s fantasies that combine myth, fairy tale, and Christian symbolism with an unusual seriousness about moral choice and sacrifice. For adult readers, the so-called "Space Trilogy" – OUT OF THE SILENT PLANET (1938), PERELANDRA (1943), and THAT HIDEOUS STRENGTH (1945) – uses science fiction as a vehicle for philosophical and theological speculation, while TILL WE HAVE FACES (1956), a retelling of the Cupid and Psyche myth, is often regarded as his most artistically mature novel. Across these works, Lewis consistently explores themes of longing, obedience, pride, and redemption, using story not merely to illustrate ideas but to test them.

Lewis’s non-fiction writings are central to his influence and remain widely read. MERE CHRISTIANITY (1942–1944) distills his wartime radio talks into a lucid account of Christian belief aimed at skeptics and lay readers, notable for its argumentative restraint and rhetorical balance. In THE PROBLEM OF PAIN (1940) and MIRACLES (1947), Lewis addresses classical philosophical objections to theism, while THE ABOLITION OF MAN (1943) offers a prescient critique of moral relativism and technocratic education. THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS (1942), though fictional in form, belongs to this apologetic corpus: its satirical epistolary voice allows Lewis to examine temptation and moral psychology with unusual subtlety. Taken together, these works exemplify his talent for translating abstract arguments into accessible prose without sacrificing intellectual rigor.

Beyond apologetics and fiction, Lewis was a serious literary scholar whose academic work shaped the study of medieval and Renaissance literature. THE ALLEGORY OF LOVE (1936) remains a landmark in the history of literary criticism, and his essays on myth, poetry, and reading reveal a critic attentive to both form and moral imagination. Lewis’s enduring significance lies in this rare combination: a first-rate scholar, a popular religious thinker, and a storyteller capable of engaging readers across ages and convictions. His work continues to invite readers to consider how reason, imagination, and belief might coexist rather than compete.
