This is our release of Appleseed: Ex Machina (2007) — original Japanese title アップルシード エクスマキナ (Appurushīdo: Ekusu Makina), directed by Shinji Aramaki.
The film continues the fully CG approach of Appleseed (2004), delivering polished visuals and expansive action while staying true to Masamune Shirow’s cyberpunk world.
Audio options include Japanese 5.1 and English 5.1, along with two commentary tracks: an English 2.0 commentary with producer Joseph Chou and animation historian Jerry Beck (Cartoon Brew), and a Japanese 2.0 commentary featuring CG directors Ootsuka Yasuhiro, Kawamura Yasushi, and staff. Blu-ray extras are a mix of Japanese and English, covering CG workflows, character design, and behind-the-scenes production.
A little known fact: Director Shinji Aramaki cited John Woo’s action choreography as a major influence on the film’s aerial combat and gunplay sequences, blending cinematic flair with stylized CG motion to create a unique visual rhythm.
