Note from Encoder

Merry Christmas (and a happy New Year) from QxR 2025!

This release contains new encodes from the recently released Tom and Jerry: The Golden Era Anthology Blu-ray set, which contains all 114 of the original shorts that were produced by Hanna-Barbera from 1940-1958 (no Gene Deitch or Chuck Jones shorts here) as well as all of the bonus features that came with them. I did say I'd never encode Tom and Jerry again, but since WB actually put some effort in this time (and Garshasp is away at the moment), I decided to make an exception.

Every short has received a new encode using CRF this time in order to preserve as much grain detail as possible; including the shorts found on The Complete CinemaScope Collection that was previously released by Garshasp. While there is nothing wrong with his release which was made use of 2-Pass encoding, CRF was definitely the way to go with these sources. Thankfully we're dealing with shorts here, so the file sizes aren't too all over the place. As I said above, WB actually put some effort in this time and every short looks very good, except for the following which WB used older Metrocolor sources for (despite reports that they weren't going to):

S1940E06 - Puss N' Toots
S1940E10 - The Lonesome Mouse
S1940E17 - Mouse Trouble
S1940E22 - Quiet Please!
S1940E24 - The Milky Waif
S1940E42 - Heavenly Puss
S1940E45 - Jerry's Diary.

They're still perfectly watchable and some viewers probably won't even notice or care, but they definitely don't look as good as the rest of the shorts included here. Most of the original negatives from MGM prior to 1951 were lost in a studio fire in 1965, so WB used the best available sources, some of which were in better shape than others. The Tom and Jerry Golden Collection Blu-rays were used for Puss N' Toots , The Lonesome Mouse , Mouse Trouble , Quiet Please! & The Milky Waif which have less DNR than The Golden Era Anthology. Heavenly Puss & Jerry's Diary weren't available on The Golden Collection, so their Golden Era Anthology sources were used.
