It was the era of Band Aid and Sir Bob. It was the age of the Compact Disc, MTV and the pop video.
During those ten years, the music moved away from the punk styles of the late 70s through a kaleidoscope of influences and fashions. The music ranged from the outrage of Frankie Goes To Hollywood to the plain silliness of Trio and ‘Da Da Da’.
The 80s saw numerous new artists come out of the “new wave” and club scene on both sides of the Atlantic. Many were “one hit wonders” but others became regular visitors to the charts.There were artists like the Bangles and Blondie in America, and from Europe, The Police, ABC, Squeeze and Spandau Ballet.
The decade had its fair share of teenage heart-throbs too. Remember Curiosity Killed The Cat? Kajagoogoo? Wham!?
In the 70s we called it disco, in the 80s it was Soul, R&B or Dance music.There were instrumental-based bands like Level 42, the visual splendour of Imagination and the studio wizardry that created Ί9’ by Paul Hardcastle.
The 80s established its new superstars led by the Eurythmics, Talking Heads and Chris Rea to stand alongside veterans of earlier eras such as Queen.
Everybody has their own special highlights of the 80s, one of pop music’s most action-packed decades. Sit back and enjoy a hundred of the decade’s most memorable moments.
