Tales from the Darkside

ComedyFantasyHorror

The first segment features an animated mummy stalking selected student victims; the second tale tells the story of a "cat from hell" who cannot be killed and leaves a trail of victims behind it; the third story is about a man who witnesses a bizarre killing and promises never to tell what he saw and the "in-between" bit is the story of a woman preparing to cook her newspaper boy for supper.

Note : Horror anthologies never get old, and here's a pretty good one that recently got a new 4k remaster. It's a movie spinoff of a TV series George Romero created after making Creepshow, and Tom Savini has referred to this as the real spiritual successor to the Creepshow films. It's stylishly shot by DP Don Draper, who also worked on Dr. Giggles, and features a cast of several stars or stars to be, including Debbie Harry, Christian Slater, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, Mark Margolis, James Remar, and Rae Dawn Chong. Good, dark fun.

In the wraparound story, Debbie Harry plays a suburban witch who's planning to turn a captured kid into a feast. To delay his death, the kid tells her three stories from the book "Tales from the Darkside". In the first, a graduate student who's been cheated out of a scholarship exacts horrible revenge of the supernatural kind using a mummy and an ancient scroll of resurrection, with a focus on gruesome ancient Egyptian burial rituals. In the second, and old man in a wheelchair hires a hitman to kill a mysterious black cat who he believes is karmic revenge for his use of cats in animal testing of pharmaceuticals. The last story is a pretty obvious adaptation of the Yuki-onna legend from Kwaidan, about a man who encounters a murderous gargoyle, but is spared on the condition he never tell anyone about his experience, and who soon after meets and falls in love with a mysterious woman far out of his league. In the end, the witch story gets resolved in a not unsatisfying manner.

This is a nice and sharp 4k remaster, maybe a bit more grainy that I would have liked, but contrast and color is excellent. The 5.1 remix sounds good too, the original stereo is fine, and three commentary tracks ought to be enough for anyone.

Hot tip

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk anthology” for more films made up of several shorter stories with some loose connective tissue, “hevk witch” for more magic users with nefarious intent, or “hevk 90s” for more from the decade when practical effects reached their peak, and then died a somewhat undignified death.
