Release Notes
The new UHD has a much improved 5.1 track which sounds more or less identical to the theatrical DTS Cinema track. The old Criterion BD has a number of changes evident in the center channel, and the sound is generally considerably more muffled than the CDTS or UHD tracks. The CDTS and UHD tracks appear very similar in the spectrogram, although the UHD has some additional filtering and a different (discrete) LFE track. In comparison to the CDTS track, after the CDTS track's +6 dB adjustment to the derived LFE and -3 dB adjustment to the rear channels, it is evident the UHD 5.1 track did not have its rear channels correctly attenuated by -3 dB. Gain was adjusted for these channels in RX and the track was re-encoded to DTS-HD MA (with the same 1509 kbps core like on the disc). Used the commentary from the BD as the UHD has a very slight band filter that doesn't appear to be filtering anything (i.e. it was applied by default). Listened to the BD commentary track at very loud volumes and couldn't detect any hiss, whine, or other unpleasant high-pitched sound that would need to be filtered, so used it. Due (presumably) to rights issues, Jacques Cousteau's name is bleeped out every time it is mentioned in the commentary. The English commentary subs replicate this censoring, either with "[bleep]" or "****", so these instances were replaced with Cousteau's name in the subtitle where necessary. That way you don't have to go to Google to find out what was censored in the first place, as I did! The PGS subtitles from the UHD are too bright (74% white, #bdbdbd) so they were tonemapped to a more standard brightness for HDR (58% white, #949494). The French (FR) subtitles are labeled as French (CA) by Disney+ but they match the unlabeled French subs from the PAL DVD exactly and don't exhibit any differences consistent with Canadian French, so they were relabeled. Thanks GizmoBal for the help reviewing these subs. Special thanks to TMT for providing the disc early.
