It’s the fourth week of heats, and a fresh batch of ambitious cooks, including a fishmonger and data scientist, are ready to kick-start their MasterChef competition. The first mission is to secure one of four aprons – their key to continuing on their culinary adventure. Those who impress will push on to cook for some special guests, with the ultimate aim of nabbing a place in this week’s quarter-final. First up is Basic to Brilliant, which asks the contestants to deliver one plate of food that shows off their chosen basic ingredient in spectacular fashion. The choices include the humble tomato, mushroom and pepper, which should all lend themselves to some fabulous creations. The best cooks will be rewarded with an apron and sail through. Those who fail to set taste buds alight will have one more shot as they take on the Mystery Box. They will have just 45 minutes to create a dish using at least one of the surprise ingredients – lamb mince, figs and butternut squash, along with the freshly stocked larder. But will the amateur cooks be able to invent a dish under this amount of pressure? Those who fail to make the grade will need to say their goodbyes. It’s straight back into battle for the cooks still standing. To land a quarter-final place, they will need to put in some hard graft as they cook up a two-course menu for three guests who know the drill well – 2023 champion Chariya Khattiyot and former finalists Omar Foster and Anurag Aggarwal. All three of them, now professional chefs in their own right, will have high expectations of today’s menus. There will be no room for mediocrity. The guests’ feedback will be taken on board, and the hopefuls who have done enough must prepare to head into the quarter-final. Nobody will want to miss out, as they will be one step closer to becoming this year’s champion.

The second heat of the week begins with eager new contenders ready for their first taste of cooking in the MasterChef kitchen. MasterChef aprons are up for grabs, but it will take a deft culinary hand to win one. Those who succeed will get the chance to cook their two-course menu for three critical diners and be in with a shot at a place in this week’s quarter-final. The first task will truly test their mettle as they turn an everyday ingredient from Basic to Brilliant. Can they reimagine their chosen items to create a dish worthy of an apron? In this heat, the selection includes beans, chicken and spinach. The ingredient they choose will need to shine, but also gel with the rest of the dish. The strongest cooks will be handed aprons, safe in the knowledge they are through to the next round. The fate of the others will be decided by one more challenge: the Mystery Box. They will have just 45 minutes to cook a dish using at least one of the secret ingredients. Chicken, peppers and apples are the delights, which should spark some interesting ideas. The dish can be embellished with incredible larder ingredients, so the amateurs’ creativity can run wild. For those who don’t outdo their competitors, hopes of a MasterChef title will be dashed. The heat will reach a crescendo with a challenge that pushes the remaining contestants to their limits. A sumptuous two-course menu must be presented to the judges, plus three guest diners: 2015 champion Simon Wood, 2017 champion Dr Saliha Mahmood Ahmed and 2015 finalist Tony Wood. If the hopefuls impress with plates that sing with flavour, a quarter-final place could be theirs for the taking. As the best three menus rise to the top, leaving the rest to hang up their aprons, the race for the title of MasterChef Champion 2025 continues.

It’s quarter-final time, and the six cooks who have already shown their potential this week are back to fight for their place in the competition. Success will mean a place in knockout week, so it’s all to play for. The brief is set by the formidable Jay Rayner, who would like each of the cooks to make a wrap. Tortillas, spring rolls, burritos and flatbreads are just some of the ideas that might come to mind. They can fill their wrap with ingredients of their choosing, but whatever wrapper they decide on will also need to be made from scratch - this is MasterChef after all. They have 90 minutes – time to create something truly delicious, but also enough to make mistakes. A spot in knockout week will be given to those who impress the judges the most.
First broadcast: 27 August 2025
