The Nine: The True Story of a Band of Women Who Survived the Worst of Nazi Germany recounts the harrowing journey of nine young women—French and Dutch Resistance fighters—who were captured by the Nazis during World War II, survived brutal conditions in concentration and labor camps, and escaped together during a death march in 1945. The leader among them was Hélène Podliasky, the author’s great-aunt.
Gwen Strauss’s meticulous research, combined with oral histories and family archives, brings to life a story of extraordinary courage, solidarity, and hope amidst the horrors of the Holocaust and Nazi Germany.
